Mass deportations
The CATO Institute, a conservative think tank, conducted a study on recent deportations in which it states that according to information analyzed from January to June of this year, 65% of immigrants detained and imprisoned by ICE in detention centers had NO criminal convictions, exposing another of Trump's big lies when he said he was going to focus on dangerous or criminal individuals, which is not true since they are terrorizing the entire immigrant community by arresting people who have never been convicted of any crime.
Despite Trump's arguments to justify his policy of mass deportations, according to data collected by sources at the Institute for Social and Economic Research, more than 65% of those detained during the fiscal year that began in October last year have no criminal convictions, which is the majority of immigrants detained recently.
According to another statistic, more than 93% of those detained have never been convicted of violent crimes, and most of those who have committed crimes are related to immigration, such as returning after being deported, traffic offenses, or nonviolent misdemeanors. This study also reveals that the number of immigrants arrested by ICE increased ninefold compared to the same period in previous years.
It is important for the public to understand that the people being detained are not criminals, as Trump claims. They are simply people who, for whatever reason, entered the country without a visa, stayed after their visa expired, or applied for political asylum.
It is sad that this important information is not being published, as the general public needs to be aware of Trump's propaganda and lies, which are only intended to justify the large number of non-criminal people who are being deported. In addition to being held in inhumane conditions, some of the detainees are being sent to prisons run by private companies that only care about making money, in conditions worse than those allowed in prisons where dangerous criminals are serving their sentences, according to the same study.
This is obviously in line with Trump's racist collaborator Stephen Miller's campaign to make 3,000 immigrant arrests per day. With this goal, which is almost impossible to achieve, they have to detain and arrest people who have no criminal record.
During his campaign, Trump promised that his deportation plan would begin with dangerous criminal immigrants, but his work to date has been to deport any immigrant, regardless of whether they have committed any crime or lived in the United States for many years. Immigrants have been victimized simply for looking for work, as in the case of the arrests made at Home Depot stores in California, where several raids have been carried out.
We must continue to fight and protest to stop ICE's indiscriminate mass deportations and demand that Congress, in turn, demand greater transparency from ICE in its reports and focus on people who pose a danger to the community, rather than continuing to arrest immigrants just to meet a certain number of arrests. We continue to fight for justice for immigrants. Yes, we can!
We are also asking our friends and readers to join the fight against the roll out of the new mega detention center in North Lake near Baldwin. In the coming days, we will be organizing protests, probably on July 4, to tell the government that we will not tolerate this kind of abuse against immigrants.
