Right now, Congress is considering approving a budget reconciliation bill for next year in which the Trump administration is asking for up to $200 billion to carry out mass deportations without due process, violating constitutional rights. It also wants to impose large increases to immigration fees and restrict work permits instead of seeking real solutions to the immigration system and building a fair, orderly, and effective system.

The new budget proposes the following negative changes:

1. Limit employment authorization documents (EADs) to only six months, which would force people to renew their work permits in very short periods and also make life difficult for employers.

2. Imposing increases of up to 3 and 5 times more on immigration quotas and also eliminating what is known as the payment exemption for low-income individuals applying for humanitarian programs such as unaccompanied children and asylum seekers.

3. They also want to implement a measure whereby the money from the fees does not go directly to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, but to the US Treasury, which means that it cannot be used to improve the delays and inefficiencies of the current immigration system.

Approval of this proposal will also allow the Trump administration to continue its plan of mass and expedited detentions and deportations. This administration has already shown us that it does not respect or comply with due process and legal protections by detaining people without reason, even U.S. citizens, having deported people who are legal permanent residents and refusing to correct administrative errors, as in the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia.

If Congress approves this budget, the administration will have up to $200 billion that will not be made through transfers, nor will there be any accountabilityl to ensure that the money is used efficiently and fairly in accordance with the law.

We must ask Congress to oppose the passage of this proposal and instead advocate for a fair, efficient system and real solutions, especially for people in programs such as DACA and TPS, as well as those who have been living in the United States for many years.

We must send letters to our congressmen asking them to oppose the fee increases, to make changes to the process to place limits on how people can be detained and deported, and to request transfer of funds be within the immigration system with acountability measures to identify problems.

We hope that Congress will stand firm and tell Trump that this is harmful not only to immigrants but also to the economy and the general welfare of the country.
